Introduction:

Hi, my name is Michael Luton and I’m going to be talking about Toy Story 3, the third instalment of the Toy Story films.

Toy Story came out in 1995 and was widely popular, so was the 2nd instalment Toy Story 2 which came out in 1999, people thought that was the end for the Toy Story films but in 2010 Toy Story 3 came out in theatres earning £1,063,171,911 worldwide, more than any of the two previous films combined. It was directed by Lee Unkrich, it was made by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios.

The voice actors in this film include some widely popular actors, Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, Joan Cusack, and Whoopi Goldberg. It was produced by Darla K. Anderson, Nicole Paradis Grindle and John Lasseter. The voice actors in the film bring the film popularity because many of the voice actors are very famous and have been in the previous 2 Toy Story films, so by being in Toy Story 3 the audience they have already will enjoy the movie.

I chose this film because recently they announced there would be a fourth film and since I enjoyed the Toy Story films when I was little I decided to choose it for a talking head topic.

In Toy Story 3, Woody, Buzz and the rest of the toys are mistakenly delivered to the Sunnyside day-care centre where the children do not play nice, instead of being taken to the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home. Apart from Woody they’re initially overjoyed to once again be played with, but their enthusiasm quickly gives way to horror as they discover the true nature of the establishment under the rule of the deceptively welcoming "Lotso" Bear.

The toys must come up with a plan and find a way out of the day care centre and back to Andy’s, but it’s much easier said than done when the leader of the day care toys, a strawberry smelling pink teddy bear has constant surveillance everywhere.

The many genres of Toy Story 3 are animation, adventure, comedy, family and fantasy. It is an all round great family film for any age and if you have seen the previous films you will definitely like Toy Story 3.

Beginning scene analysis:

Now I’m going to analyse the beginning scene and the ending scene.

In the beginning of the film, the toys are being played with but it turns out that it is a flashback from a video of someone videotaping him playing with his toys. Then the video stop’s, the screen goes to black and it shows the toys in Andy’s toy box in his bedroom.

The sound is this scene is good, just like the other films the infamous “You’ve got a friend in me” song is playing while the scene is going on. And of course we’ve got the same voice actors as the previous films. Also in the very first scene there is music when the toys are being played with, the music used is typical hero type music.

The lighting is decent because in the first scene the video playing has good lighting while it’s playing, but then it gets darker when the scene switches to when they are in the toy box.

The shots in the first scene are varied because the camera playing the scene follows Andy around while he plays so it’s almost like a documentary to start the film off because the person filming has a shaky hand and follows him around.

The editing in the first scene was good it was edited in like a flashback sort of theme, with all of the home videos playing one after another.

The props used in the first scene are the toys, because they are being played with by Andy and in one of the videos Andy is eating popcorn with all of his toys.

The costumes in the film are the same costumes they wore for the last two previous films. And obviously as it is a family film the people in the film are wearing normal bright coloured clothes.

The setting is in Andy’s house in different rooms and places where he is playing with his toys. This tells a story as the old home videos are playing because it shows you that Andy has grown up.

Ending scene analysis:

In the ending of the film, Andy has given his toys to a little girl called Bonnie, he introduces the toys to her and he plays with them for one last time with Bonnie, then he gets in his car and leaves.

The sound used in this scene is sad music, the scene is very quite to start with then when they play with the toys the sound gets more joyful, but then sad again when he leaves.

The lighting is bright because it is the middle of the day and the scene is set in the front garden of Bonnies house. So the light in this scene is good. The lighting adds emotion at the end when Andy is driving off.

Different shots are used in this scene, close ups are used on the toys and Andy and also medium shots were used to get Bonnie and Andy in shot.

The setting is the front garden of Bonnie’s house when Andy gives all of his toys to Bonnie and drives away in his car; the setting is broad daylight so it adds to emotion of the scene.

The props used in the ending scene are the box that Andy brings the toys in, also the whole of the front garden is a prop.

The costumes used in the last scene are casual clothes; Bonnie and Andy are both wearing normal clothes while the toys are all wearing the same clothes.

The editing in this scene is good, in the part where Andy drives off; the camera is behind Woody’s shoulder and focuses on the car driving down the road.

The style of this end scene is slow paced, because it’s a big moment in the movie and also a sad moment.

Key points in between beginning and the end:

The first point of conflict in Toy Story 3 occurs when the Lotso bear locks the toys cages in one of the play rooms in the day care centre. The lighting in the following scenes when they are stuck in the cages is pretty dark because it is night time and also the lights in the day care centre are all switched off. The toys must come up with a plan to get out and past Buzz whose command box was switched so he would join Lotso and imprison his friends.

With regards to emotions, in the scene the toys looked scared because they have been taken prisoner by their friend buzz and the other toys from the day care centre. Buzz Lightyear has a fierce look on his face while guarding them.

The shots in this scene was good, there was a shot which showed all of the cages and Buzz guarding them.

The lighting was pretty dark because it was night time and the lights were all of in the day care centre. It then changes to morning so it gets brighter. There are no shadows from the toys when it gets lighter.

The setting is in one of the day care centre rooms, the toys are trapped in separate cages and are being guarded by their friend Buzz Lightyear. The setting also adds tension to the scene as they are being kept prisoner.

The props used in this scene are the cages used to put the toys in. Also the toy pig plays a harmonica while he is in the cage.
